Naxos

According to local myth, the god of sky and thunder, Zeus grew up in a cave on the island of Naxos. Coincidentally, Naxos is also said to be where Theseus abandoned Princess Ariadne of Crete after their successful attempt to kill the Minotaur.

Santorini

Thira is Santorini's official name. Venetians created the name Santorini in 1153 after an Arab geographer by the name of Edrisi. The words Santa and Irene (Saint Irene) also influenced the name Santorini. This came from the church in the valley of Therassia or the early Christian basilica in Perissa. Initially, the island was known as Kallístē, meaning "the most beautiful one" before it was called Santorini.
