Swiss landscapes are some of the most beautiful in Europe, and the whole world for that matter.
The landlocked country features awe-inspiring Alpine landscapes, crystal-clear lakes, and cities and towns that follow suit. One of the best ways to see it all is by taking a ride of the Glacier Express. The train connects the two major mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz and whisks passengers through the central Swiss Alps. The train cars have a glass ceiling, providing uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside along the journey.
Alps
Switzerland has some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in all of Europe, thanks to the astonishing Swiss Alps. Even if you're not skiing or hiking, just admiring the majestic Alps will be sure to amaze you. Everywhere you turn, the scenery looks like something out of a Bond movie with snow-covered peaks rising high about you. While you're there, keep an eye out for Matterhorn, which is the most iconic mountain in Switzerland.
Alps Wildlife
A highlight of any hike in the Swiss Alps is wildlife viewing. The population of Swiss Alpine creatures has continued to rebound and flourish in recent years after sever centuries of decline. While hiking in the Alps, and particularly on the Haute Route, be on the lookout for Chamois. This goat-like animal is found at moderately high elevations throughout the Alps and is known for being agile climbers against the rocky terrain. Another local favorite is the Alpine ibex. This mountain goat is instantly recognizable by the male's large and ridged horns.
Saxon Switzerland National Park
Whether you are planning a day trip or want to go exploring, Saxon Switzerland National Park is a great place to escape. The Park is Saxony's only national park and is the only rocky national park in Germany. Let yourself be enchanted by the ancient and mythically beautiful natural landscape. It is one of Europe's last vast wildernesses, ideal for hiking and climbing or just a relaxed day out. One of the most iconic features is the Bastei, a rock formation that is now the most popular day-trip destination in the region.
Castles of Switzerland
Switzerland is home to some of the most spectacular castles in Europe. The country is famous for its military neutrality, and this can easily be observed through the fantastically preserved castles, many of which date back to the medieval times. One of the best examples of this is the Chillon Castle. Located on a rock on the eastern side of the picturesque Lake Geneva, the castle dates back to 1150 and is one of the most visited castles in the country.
